Long Distance is a video series that uses found footage source material to reflect on the ideas and images connected to long distance travel in the modern age. It was exhibited at the Transmediale Vorspiel 2019 in Berlin, as a part of the Departure, Arrival, Return Exhibition by the artist collective Lagoon Parliament. It has three parts.
Long Distance – Part 1Quatar Hypnosis I11 min(excerpt)
Long Distance – Part 1Quatar Hypnosis II4 min(excerpt)
Quatar Hypnosis manipulates online commercials for Quatar Airways' new Airbus A380 luxury airplanes. It plays with the hyperreality of the 3D rendered commercials – and shows what might be at their core: a vision for a world that seems absurd, and eerie.
Long Distance – Part 2From Far Ago11 min
From Far Ago is made of Airplane commercials from the 50s to the 90s that were playfully reedited. It's a satirical account of the history of advertisements and air travel and deals with the tropes and images that those industries used and reinforced.
Long Distance – Part 3Traveled Atmosphere40 min
Traveled Atmosphere is a compilation of heavily slowed-down found footage, that chronicles the preparation, take-off, flight and crash landing of a commercial aeroplane. It was part of an exhibition, where it was screened in a large room covered in mattresses. The visitors were invited to stay and relax, while the plane took off, flew and finally crash landed.
